Delicious dishes

Bremen, and North Germany in general, has a menu full of local delicacies that are absolute must-tries when visiting the city. Here are a few of the top dishes and the best places to enjoy them.

Grünkohl, or kale and sausage, is a warming classic. This dish of rich local kale with smoked pork sausage is best served in a traditional restaurant in the historic Schnoor quarter, which features fairytale architecture and bustling streets. We recommend sitting down to a plate at the long-running Kleiner Olymp. This classic German dining institution serves spectacular Grünkohl and also has a house beer that pairs perfectly.

Fried smelt is a traditional fish street dish that couldn’t be more local to Bremen, with most of the fish coming directly from the Wesser itself. These fresh, small silver fish are caught and coated in rye flour, then fried and served piping hot to hungry locals and tourists alike. This local snack is best enjoyed in the food markets. Visit Market Hall Eight and enjoy these alongside other street food favourites.

Raise a glass

In Bremen, beer is king, and its legacy stretches back to the 11th century. One of the biggest beers in the city is the world-famous Becks, which has been brewing here for over 150 years. But there’s more than just steins on offer. Whether you’re looking for a post-work drink or a full night out on the town, Bremen’s nightlife has something for everyone. Here are a few of our favourites for different occasions.

A night to remember starts with a great drink in a vibrant bar bustling with life and live entertainment. For that, we recommend a visit to Meisenfrei. This neon-lit blues club is overflowing with unique charm. Meisenfrei offers beers on tap and live music most nights. It might not be a high-end cocktail bar, but if you want to socialise, meet new friends and enjoy a taste of the local Bremen culture, this is your bar.

A cocktail or two is perfect for a post-work get-together or a celebration with friends. Lemon Lounge is ideal for anyone looking for great views, an incredible atmosphere and a curated menu of classic and contemporary cocktails. Their menu is inspired and split into decades, so you can enjoy a taste of every generation, from the roaring 20s to the swinging 60s. If you’re partial to a picture-perfect cocktail in stunning surroundings, pull up a stool.
